Bio

Gustavo Moraga is a PhD student and researcher at the Department of Green Chemistry and Technology from Ghent University (2017-2021). His PhD project aims to develop indicators to assess circularity in products. Gustavo has experience in quantitative sustainability assessments with a life cycle perspective for clean production. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture (First-class honours, 2012) at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and a Master in Engineering (2017) at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Before his master's degree, Gustavo worked for more than five years with consultancy for sustainability in buildings using thermo-energetic modelling to improve operational energy use (e.g. air-conditioning, lights, and electrical appliances). His master thesis evaluated the environmental life cycle impacts of a Brazilian social house using Life Cycle Assessment methodology and thermo-energetic modelling. This thesis was an essential step in the Brazilian context since it was one of the first studies in the country to developed regionalised data to assess the environmental impacts of houses and building materials. The thesis' results meant to support policy development in the context of the program "Minha Casa, Minha Vida", the most significant social housing program in Brazil. After his master's degree, Gustavo worked for one year as a researcher at the same university with a Latin American consortium to provide local data for the Ecoinvent, a well-established life cycle inventory database.
